If you’re wandering through Miyajima’s busy Omotesandō shopping street (the lane that leads to the world-famous Itsukushima Shrine), you won’t miss the tempting smell of oysters on the grill. I headed straight for Miyajima Hanayashiki, the stall famous for its “yakigaki” (grilled oysters), and here’s my take on what to expect and how to make the most of it.

Miyajima Hanayashiki sits right in the middle of Miyajima’s Omotesandō shopping street — easy to spot, just across from the tourist information desk. Address: 531-2 Miyajima-cho, Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. Opening hours are typically 10:00–17:30 and they’re open every day.

Menu highlights

All oyster dishes come as two oysters per serving. Here are the options I found on the day:

* Tokusen (Special) Grilled Oyster — ¥600.
* Cheese grilled oyster — ¥750.
* Soy-butter grilled oyster — ¥750.
* Miso-butter grilled oyster — ¥750.
* Anago (conger eel) grilled oyster — ¥1,000.
* Hiroshima-lemon soy / miso-butter — ¥800.

Drinks include refreshing lemon-based sodas and lemon sours — perfect on a warm day (prices are ¥500 per drink).

The experience — what actually happens

You order at the counter and are given a token with a number. Oysters are cooked in batches (they call out for 4–5 groups at a time), so expect a short wait — on a busy day it took about 15 minutes from order to plate. If you prefer to sit, there’s an indoor seating area where you can relax and enjoy your oysters without rushing.

Taste notes: the grill leaves a pleasant toastiness on the shell while the meat inside stays creamy — grilling concentrates the oyster’s umami, so each bite is rich and satisfying (even if you usually prefer raw oysters!).
