If you’ve ever been to Hawaii, you’ve probably come across Leonard’s, the legendary bakery known for its melt-in-your-mouth malasadas. But did you know there’s a branch right here in Japan, and it’s the only one—located in Yokohama? Inside Yokohama World Porters, this is the only Leonard’s shop in the country, and it’s become a must-visit for both Hawaii lovers and anyone with a soft spot for fluffy fried treats.
What is Leonard’s?

Leonard’s first opened in 1952 in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. Over the years, it’s become famous for its malasadas—Portuguese-style doughnuts that are deep-fried and coated in sugar. In Hawaii, long queues are the norm, with locals and tourists alike flocking to get a taste.
Leonard’s finally made its way to Japan in December 2020, opening its first and only international branch in Yokohama. Since then, it’s gained a loyal following and continues to trend on social media.
Who Should Visit?
You’ll love Leonard’s if:
You’re craving a taste of Hawaii without the flight.
You like doughnuts that aren’t overly sweet.
You’re exploring Yokohama and fancy a sweet break.

My Review: Tried & Tested
I went for the custard-filled option this time.

The outer layer was generously coated in sugar and had a satisfying crispiness, while the inside was airy and soft. The custard itself was surprisingly light and not too sweet—perfect for those who prefer a more subtle dessert. While it may not have that flashy wow factor, the simple and comforting taste made me want to come back for more.
Queue & Timing

I visited around 1:00pm on a weekday and there were about 10 people in line. Fortunately, the queue moved quickly, and I only waited around 5 minutes. The staff were quick and efficient, and the malasadas came out piping hot. Weekends may be busier, so if possible, aim for a weekday or get there soon after opening.

Final Thoughts
Leonard’s in Yokohama is a rare find—the only place in Japan where you can try these famous Hawaiian malasadas. Light, fluffy, and freshly fried, they’re a delight for anyone with a sweet tooth. And with its convenient location, it’s the perfect stop during your Yokohama sightseeing.
