I recently visited a brand-new spot in Ōwakudani that opened in April 2025 — it’s called Chikyuu no Tani, which roughly means “Valley of the Earth.” Located just outside Ōwakudani Station, this fresh addition combines a scenic viewing deck with a stylish café and market.

Sadly, the weather wasn’t on my side that day — the skies were gloomy, and I missed the chance to see the famous steam plumes clearly. Despite that, the food and sweets at the market completely exceeded my expectations. Let’s dive into what makes this new destination worth checking out.
Getting around Hakone is easier than you might think.
What Exactly Is “Chikyuu no Tani”?

Located at the end of the Hakone Ropeway, right in front of Ōwakudani Station, Chikyuu no Tani is a modern space designed for relaxing and enjoying the area’s natural wonders. On a clear day, you’re treated to sweeping views of Ōwakudani’s volcanic steam vents — though, as I learned, the mountain weather can change in a flash.
The viewing deck itself is quite spacious, with benches and rest areas that make it perfect for a scenic break or a photo session. When I visited, the place was buzzing with international tourists — it’s clearly already a hit!

Klook.comTani no Marché – Gourmet Bites with a Local Twist

The market section, called Tani no Marché, is home to exclusive snacks and drinks you won’t find anywhere else. These treats go beyond what you might expect, even compared to the classic black eggs, which are famous but located a two-minute walk away from Tani no Marché.
Here are a few highlights
Ōwakudani Curry Buns

These soft steamed buns are filled with a mildly spiced curry — perfect for a warming bite on chilly mountain days.
Tanimal Muffins

These Instagram-worthy muffins come with a swirl of buttercream on top, and a fun surprise inside: dry ice that creates a steaming effect, just like the valley itself!
Tanimal Soft Serve

You can choose from Vanilla, Hakone-grown Black Tea, or a mixed swirl. The texture is rich, but the aftertaste is surprisingly light. A perfect treat on a hot day.
What I Tried

Tanimal Muffin
I went for the chocolate one — moist, sweet, and topped with a light buttercream. The dry ice hidden inside creates a cool misty effect, mimicking Ōwakudani’s volcanic steam. Both clever and delicious!
Valley Soda
At the bottom of the glass is a jelly packed with fruit — give it a good stir before drinking. It’s light, citrusy, and super refreshing. I’d definitely recommend it for summer.
Don’t Forget the Souvenirs

Tani no Marché is more than just food — the gift selection is top-notch. It honestly felt like a full-on souvenir shop rather than a station-side stall.
Some local finds include

Hakone Manju (steamed buns)
Ōwakudani Curry (take-home version)
Leaf pies and sweet rusks
Locally sourced and crafted food products
Final Thoughts
Chikyuu no Tani is a brilliant new addition to the Ōwakudani area — combining great views, unique treats, and a surprisingly wide range of gifts all in one compact space. While the weather didn’t cooperate for my visit, I was still glad I came. Next time, I’ll be checking the forecast closely and aiming for blue skies — this spot definitely deserves a second trip!
