Hello, there. When visiting Hakodate, most people focus on seafood or ramen. That makes sense—but there’s one local favourite you really shouldn’t skip. It’s yakitori from Hasegawa Store, a small local convenience store with a big reputation.
In this post, I’m sharing my Hasegawa Store yakitori takeaway experience at the Hakodate Station branch. I’ll also explain how to order and why “yakitori” here is a little different from what you might expect.

What Is Hasegawa Store?
In Hakodate, Yakitori Means Pork

Hasegawa Store is a Hakodate-born convenience store. What makes it special is the grill inside the shop. When you order, staff grill the skewers fresh, right in front of you. Here’s something important for first-time visitors:
In Hakodate, yakitori usually means pork, not chicken. The most popular skewer is pork shoulder with spring onion, grilled and coated in a sweet soy-based sauce. This local food culture surprises many travellers, and that’s exactly what makes it fun to try.
Hakodate Station Store Review :Perfect for Quick Takeaway

The Hakodate Station branch sits just steps from JR Hakodate Station. There’s no eat-in space, but that actually works well for travellers.
You can grab skewers and:
• eat them on the go
• take them back to your hotel
• enjoy them later in the evening
Many people know Hasegawa Store for its famous yakitori bento boxes. However, you can also order single skewers, which is ideal if you’re not that hungry. Some skewers are pre-packed, but I highly recommend ordering fresh. The smoky aroma alone is worth it.
The Hakodate Station branch does not have an English menu, so you may need a translation app or a bit of courage to fill in the order sheet! If you prefer a larger shop, they also have branches in the Bay Area and near Goryokaku Park.
I highly recommend having a stable internet connection for your translation app!
How to Order Yakitori at Hasegawa Store

Ordering is easy, even without an English menu.
1. Fill in the order sheet

Write the item name, sauce (tare or salt), and quantity.
2. Pay at the till
Hand the sheet to the staff and pay first.
3. Wait for your number
Your number will be called when the skewers are ready. Late morning was quiet when I visited, but lunchtime and early evening can get busy. Allow extra time if you’re visiting then.
What I Tried

I ordered two skewers as a light snack.
Pork Skewer (¥140)
This is the Hakodate classic. Juicy pork shoulder alternates with spring onion, all coated in a rich, sweet soy sauce. It’s bold, comforting, and very satisfying. After one bite, I knew I’d order the rice bowl version next time.
Chicken & Garlic Skewer (¥140)
Perfect if you prefer chicken. Tender thigh meat comes with chunky pieces of garlic that soak up the sauce beautifully. It’s filling and full of flavour.
Quick tip: Only the pork skewers include spring onion. Chicken skewers usually come plain or with garlic.
A Must-Try Local Drink Pairing

For the ultimate local experience, pair your yakitori with Ribbon Napolin, a classic soda you’ll only find in Hokkaido. This iconic bright orange drink is a long-time favorite here. Its sweet, refreshing fizz is the perfect palate cleanser for the rich, savory yakitori sauce. Since Hasegawa Store stocks a variety of drinks including juices and beer, you can easily grab your favorite combo on the spot!
Why Takeaway Works So Well Here
Skewers come packed securely in a small plastic container, easy to carry around.

For hotel nights
The sauce stays tasty even when cool, but reheating briefly makes it even better.
For sightseeing days
Compact, filling, and easy to eat between stops. This is why Hasegawa Store yakitori takeaway works so well for travellers.
